9B: How to structure a good analysis



1. Read the following analysis:


This documentary depicts the story of a 10 years old Iranian boy and his family as asylum seekers, and how his experience in the detention centre has been.
The documentary’s purpose is not just to show everyone many families’ and children’s awful and desperate situation, but also to make us think over it and consider helping them. Its target audience is adults and teenagers with curious minds that want to help the unluckiest ones.
This documentary uses a range of emotive techniques, but its affective images stand out from the rest of it. Firstly, the shots of the hostile detention centre portray that it is an inappropriate place for a kid to be in as it is the opposite of a home. Furthermore, the image of the toy bear, that has been destroyed gives the impression that these policemen had no feelings and could even destroy his childhood.

In my opinion, the most effective part of the broadcast is its opening, where in the Parliament, Nick Clegg claimed the detention of 1000 young, innocent asylum seekers. This scene was chosen to highlight that the story they are presenting is a completely serious problem and un-invented, as it has been a debate theme for the ones who rule the country.


2. Now, decide what went well (WWW) and what they could do to make it even better (EBI):
Read through the checklist and see what they have included, and what they need to do to make it even better.

For example:

www: The advert has been described effectively and the purpose has been described, with evidence taken from the video.

ebi: The explanation of techniques needs to include quotes from the video.
Their opinion is stated but the person needs to pick a favourite part from the video and explain its effectiveness.

Have they mentioned technical and emotional techniques and how they are used?
Have they picked out a concrete example from the video?
Have they explained the  intended effect on the viewer and why it has been chosen?
4. PERSONAL OPINION
Have they said if they think the advert is effetive or not? Have they justified their opinion?
Have they included what their favourite part of the advert is? Have they explained why this is the case?
